The Blues Band - Official Blues Band Bootleg Album 1982

The Blues Band - Official Blues Band Bootleg Album 1982

Blues

England's the Blues Band is led by ex-Manfred Mann vocalist Paul Jones and guitarist/vocalist Dave Kelly, who, before forming the group in 1979, had been a member of the John Dummer Blues Band and issued several solo recordings on his own (Kelly had also received praise for his playing by such blues legends as Howlin' Wolf and John Lee Hooker). After hooking up with friend/bassist Gary Fletcher, the seeds for the Blues Band were sown, resulting in countless albums (including such titles as 1980's Official Bootleg Album and Ready, 1981's Itchy Feet, 1982's Brand Loyalty which featured new member ex-Family drummer Rob Townsend, 1983's Bye Bye Blues, 1986's These Kind of Blues, 1989's Back for More, 1991's Fat City, 1993's Homage, and 1995's Wire Less, among others). In addition, Kelly formed the Dave Kelly Band in the mid-'80s (issuing four albums), penned music for commercials and such projects as BBC TV's King of the Ghetto and The Comic Strip Presents Strike!, has been voted Best Acoustic Artist by BBC polls throughout the '90s, and is an honorary patron of the London Guitar College with Hank Marvin.

The Blues Band - Be My Guest 2003

The Blues Band - Be My Guest 2003

Blues

This is BGO's first ever compilation album made up of individual tracks from separate LPs put together with full guidance and support from the Blues Band and featuring some of the finest guest performances of their entire career. The list of guests reads like a who's who of the British blues and R'n'B music scene of the 60's and 70's. It includes musicians as talented and diverse as Charlie Watts and Ian Stewart (Rolling Stones), Georgie Fame, Jools Holland, Phil May (the Pretty Things), Memphis Horns, Bob Hall (one of the UK's finest boogie woogie pianists), Rockin' Dopsie, Jo Ann Kelly and many others. Brand new 2003 sleevenote by Tom McGuinness. The Blues Band are still touring around the world, thus keeping their profile high and performing many of these songs today. Tracklisting: The Cat (guest: Bob Hall) Big Fine Girl (guests: Mick Weaver/Rumour Brass) Hey Hey Little Girl (guests: Rockin' Dopsie/Chester Zeno) Don't Lie To Me (guest: Jo Ann Kelly) Big Boss Man (guest: Phil May) Bad Penny Blues (guest: Ian Stewart/ Charlie Watts/ Dave Green) When It Itches I Scratch (guest: Katie Webster) Bad Boy (guests: Big Joe Duskin/Plas Johnson) Can't Get My Ass In Gear (guests: Mike Sanchez/Plas Johnson) Normal Service (guests: Memphis Horns) Longing For You Baby (guests: Bob Hall/ Geraint Watkins) Fat City (guests: Nat Adderley/ Kokomo Singers) Cold Emotions, Frozen Hearts (guests: Memphis Horns/ Kokomo Singers) Let The Good Times Roll (guest: Jools Holland) CC Rider (guests: Jona Lewie/ Mike Paice) Baby Please Don't Go (guests: Peter King/Onslaught Orchestra) What You Wanted (guests: Pee Wee Ellis/ Georgie Fame) Half The Man (Twice The Fool) (guest: Ian McLagan) Resting On Jesus (guest: Chris Barber) Jesus indeed- think of how much alcohol was consumed that night!!

Led by several Manfred Mann alumni - Paul Jones, Tom McGuinness, and Dave Kelly - this English blues ensemble has been rocking along for a quarter of a century. And this anthology is a perfect place to hear its well-rounded repertoire. The 20-track selection includes a nice mix of rhythm-and-blues and boogie-woogie, along with more conventional blues fare, and offers extra treats in the form of several special guests. Charlie Watts and the now-deceased Ian Stewart of The Rolling Stones show up on a few tracks, as does the former zydeco accordionist Rockin' Dopsie, pianists Katie Webster and Big Joe Duskin, Pretty Things guitarist Phil May, trad jazzman Chris Barber, singers Jools Holland and Georgie Fame, and the famed Memphis Horns. So you can imagine how tight and impassioned this sounds. The songs are nearly evenly split between originals and well-known favorites, such as "CC Rider" and "Big Boss Man". Although the band largely operated out of the spotlight all these years and hasn't broken any new musical ground, these guys know how to play, and this album rivals any swinging blues collection released in the United States for many years.

Dirty Blues Band - Stone Dirt 1969

Dirty Blues Band - Stone Dirt 1969
Label: Blackrose

Blues

For their second album, a revised version of the Dirty Blues Band cut ten excellent numbers in a single session in April of 1968, which actually yielded more satisfying results than the original group's earlier debut LP. Rod Piazza is not only in great voice (as is his harmonica), but this version of the band — with Rick Lunetta on guitar, Greg Anderson on bass, and Dave Miter on drums, plus Pat Maloney on piano and organ and reedmen Jimmy Forrest and Willie Green, with Freddie Hill on trumpet — seems a lot more comfortable here. The music surges and flows, and this reviewer — who is not usually partial to blues bands with horns — found himself swept along with Piazza's work on standards by Willie Dixon ("Bring It on Home," "I Can't Quit You Baby"), John Lee Hooker ("It's My Own Fault Baby"), as well as originals such as "Tell Me" and "She's the One." In fact, the highlight of the album is his "Sittin' Down Wonderin'," where Piazza and company sound uncannily like Albert King, and Lunetta takes a killer solo around Maloney's brilliantly understated organ fills. And mostly the reeds and trumpet are used with admirable restraint where they turn up at all, most successfully on a soaring rendition of "You've Got to Love Her with a Feeling." The one pity is that the band didn't last long enough to capitalize on any success that this album might have seen, because one suspects that would have been considerable, at the time.

Part of a relatively obscure West Coast blues scene based in Riverdale, California, in the late 1960s, the Dirty Blues Band played straightforward, lovingly attentive, and competently rendered electric blues. This twofer collects the band's first two albums, both released in 1968, and finds them riffing on a mix of stinging originals and well-known Willie Dixon standards such as "Spoonful," "Bring It on Home," and "I Can't Quit You, Baby." Of particular note to collectors is the presence of Glenn Ross Campbell, who, following a move to the U.K., would found the Misunderstood and later Juicy Lucy.
