Roy HARGROVE - With The Tenors Of Our Time 1994

Roy HARGROVE - With The Tenors Of Our Time 1994

Jazz

Trumpeter Roy Hargrove has the opportunity of a lifetime on this recording, sharing separate songs with five great tenors: Johnny Griffin, Joe Henderson, Branford Marsalis, Joshua Redman, and Stanley Turrentine. Everyone fares well, including Hargrove's group (Ron Blake on tenor and soprano, pianist Cyrus Chestnut, bassist Rodney Whitaker, and drummer Gregory Hutchinson). The young trumpeter (who is vying for Lee Morgan's unoccupied chair) keeps up with the saxophonists on this generally relaxed affair; recommended for hard bop fans.

Roy HARGROVE With Strings - Moment to Moment 2000

Roy HARGROVE With Strings - Moment to Moment 2000
Label: Verve

Jazz

A public figure or celebrity has "made it" when his face appears on the cover of TIME magazine or perhaps when a parade in her honor is held in New York. For a jazz artist, 'making it' means recording with an orchestra. Charlie Parker With Strings may have been the first in a long line of jazz records to court the romance of a string section. For trumpeters, Clifford Brown and Chet Baker's orchestral albums come to mind.
Trumpeter Roy Hargrove was known early in his career (1989 or so) as a hard-bop descendant of Clifford Brown. His early Novus recordings (the best being The Vibe ) showed a fire in his belly for all things breakneck. A natural talent, Hargrove developed his lyrical side with explorations of the jazz tradition, the albums Family (1995) and an often overlooked trio (with Stephan Scott and Christian McBride) tribute to the music of Charlie Parker entitled Parker's Mood displayed a matured horn. His Cuban jazz record, Crisol opened a new door and returned the fire to his music with a Latin sound. Lately he has been working with a big band, I suspect a recording of which should surface soon.

Hargrove has reached a jazz pinnacle, his story has made the cover of jazz magazines and this With Strings record is his parade. But for Hargrove and his bandmates, the twelve ballads presented sound like a Ferrari driven at 10mph. His band, which includes the Cannonball Adderley descendant Sherman Irby and a pure hard-bop rhythm section seem to ooze energy restraining themselves. Moment To Moment, better than anything Terence Blanchard has produced, is Hargrove's ticket to score upcoming movies. The Monterey Jazz Festival Chamber Orchestra, whose arrangements were written by Larry Willis, Gil Goldstein, and Cedar Walton, are tastefully minimal. Perhaps the recording venue, the Monterey Peninsula, and the music choice: Mandel, Cahn, Mancini, Jobim, Dorsey, and Methany-ballads account for the quixotic feelings exuded here. A first-class recording and beautiful sound mark Hargrove's sophistication as an artist. He has painted the final scene to a very heartbreaking melancholy film in my mind. I couldn't watch it everyday, but it certainly serves it's purpose.

Like Miles Davis before him, Hargrove possesses a restrained melancholy that he reserves for occasions such as this. Sticking mostly to flugelhorn, his blue tone and practiced control mesh with the cushioning strings to create a smoky atmosphere ...    Full Descriptionperfectly suited to the heartfelt melodies of familiar works like "You Go to My Head" and "I Fall in Love Too Easily." Some of the most expressive highlights of the disc include the Sinatra classic "I'm a Fool to Want You," Ray Noble's "The Very Thought of You," and Pat Metheny's "Always and Forever."

As with most great soloists, Roy Hargrove's discography would not be complete without an album of romantic ballads accompanied by a lush string orchestra. MOMENT TO MOMENT is the trumpeter's first foray into this popular format, and he accomplishes his mission with musicality and style.

Roy HARGROVE Quintet - Nothing Serious 2006

Roy HARGROVE  Quintet - Nothing Serious 2006
Label: Verve

Jazz

Despite the title, this disc--simultaneously released with Distractions, a CD by his neo-soul group, RH Factor, is trumpeter Roy Hargrove's first acoustic jazz recording since 2000 release, Moment to Moment. The leader's full-bodied, bravura tones are as bright and bold as ever, edging more into the stylistic atmosphere once occupied by the former trumpet god, Freddie Hubbard. Hargrove is backed by a quintet featuring ex-Jazz Messenger, pianist Ronnie Matthews, bassist Dwayne Burno, drummer Willie Jones IIII, and alto saxophonist/flutist Justin Robinson. They pull no punches on these no-nonsense tunes, like the Latin-tinged title track, and the John Coltrane/Ornette Coleman-coded "Camaraderie." Special guest Slide Hampton makes his elegant trombone presence felt on his soaring tune, "A Day in Vienna," on the waltzy "Salima's Dance," and the standard, "Invitation." So much for the myth that jazz musicians like Hargrove can't play funk and swing at the same time.

Roy HARGROVE,Christian McBride,Stephen Scott - Parker's Mood 1995

Roy HARGROVE,Christian McBride,Stephen Scott - Parker's Mood 1995
Label: Verve
Recorded at Effanel Music Studio, New York from April 12-14, 1995

Jazz

On this unusual album, Roy Hargrove (trumpet, flugelhorn), Christian McBride (bass) and Stephen Scott (piano) pay homage to the father of bebop with a generous set of (mostly) Charlie Parker compositions performed in trio, duet and solo arrangements. These three musicians, all of whom are part of the back-to-bop youth movement and all of whom have made names for themselves as session players and fledgling bandleaders, approach the tunes with a combination of reverence and iconoclastic innovation -- how often do you think you'll hear "Red Cross" as a bass solo or "Chasin' the Bird" as a trumpet/bass duet? This approach has its limitations, of course; as revealing as Hargrove's solo take on "Dewey Square" is, sometimes the weight of rhythmic responsibility weighs too heavily on McBride's shoulders during the trio numbers, and the groove suffers. Unless you're listening on headphones or in a quiet room with very good speakers, the rhythmic thread of the bassline can easily get lost in the mix, leaving Scott's syncopated comping sounding disjointed. But it doesn't happen very often, and the overall effect of this album is one of new light being shed on an aging but beautiful art collection. Those who know these tunes already will enjoy the album most. Those who don't will find they have much to learn, and should be excited at the prospect.

In the spirit of continuity and tradition, producers Richard Seidel and Don Sickler gathered the pick of the litter for a convocation over the still-warm remains of Charlie Parker, the most vital, visionary figure in 20th Century music. What ...    Full Descriptionmakes PARKER'S MOOD so special, and so refreshingly different from your typical Bird blowing session, is the sense of intimacy and interchange, as trumpeter, bassist and pianist take on these complex rhythms and melodies, gathered in a circle, live to two-track, without the aid of a drummer.

As a result, PARKER'S MOOD is full of surprises. Not the least of which is the recorded sound, which is resoundingly deep and full of detail, with a real sense of air and space. Much of the credit must go to McBride, whose enormous beat ("Marmaduke"), witty arco work ("Steeplechase") and thundering blues drive ("Red Cross"), and authentic downhome funk ("Star Eyes") are as close to an ideal acoustic bass sound as this generation of players has yet produced.

The taciturn, reticent qualities which distinguish Stephen Scott's piano playing, make him and ideal partner in these proceedings. On "Laura" his serene, bell-like chords frame Hargrove's taut delivery of the melody in dreamy shades of turquoise and green, and his solo makes thoughtful use of space and dynamic contrasts to bring home the point--sweet and romantic without blubbering all over the chords. And check out his solo on "Bongo Bop"--the brother can swing. And Hargrove, always known for his chops, seems to find a new gravity in Bird's intricate melodies, from the muted joy of "Dexterity" through the dancing whimsy of "Chasin' The Bird."
