While the early 2000s bore witness to a bevy of youthful standards singers with earnestly traditional vocals, New Yorker Jane Monheit preceded Norah Jones, Michael Buble, Katie Melua et al. She wowed the jazz world when she was barely out of her teens with her 2000 debut, NEVER NEVER LAND, and quickly ascended to stardom. Monheit's fourth record, 2004's TAKING A CHANCE ON LOVE, expresses her love for movie musicals of the 1930s and '40s.

From both Monheit's song choices and the fervor she pours into these selections, it's virtually impossible to challenge the sincerity of her affection. Monheit opens by finding a truly original, offbeat angle to the oft-visited Fats Waller classic "Honeysuckle Rose" and continues to connect throughout the 11 subsequent tracks. She teams up with the aforementioned Michael Buble on a charged version of the always-lively "I Won't Dance" and finds every ounce of sultriness in "Why Can't You Behave?" and "Dancing in the Dark." As with most of the acclaimed jazz stylists of her day, Monheit possesses incredible vocal shrewdness, but it is her almost spiritual connection to the tunes of a bygone era that clearly sets her apart.

Although this entire recording is terrific, Jane Monheit's interpretation and performance of 'Waters of March' is one of my favorite recordings. This is a performance that can only come about because she believes the words and it has to come from her soul. She hits every note, her timing is perfect and the inflection for each word makes this song come alive. If Antonio Carlos Jobim were alive to hear her performance of his song, I am sure he would say, "yeah...that is what I meant".

Since the acclaimed jazz singer was still quite young at the time of this release and had only four albums to her name, it may seem a bit premature to release an album tiled THE VERY BEST OF JANE MONHEIT. Yet Monheit's vocal gifts are such that.  
Full Descriptiona best-of compilation seems far from precocious, especially since Monheit has more nuance, precision, and timbral control than most jazz singers twice her age. This sampler cherry-picks from her first efforts, and session help from old-school luminaries like Kenny Barron (piano), Ron Carter (bass), and David "Fathead" Newman (saxophone) give the set a sparkling, timeless quality.

At the tender age of 20, New York vocalist Jane Monheit was the first runner-up in the 1998 Theolonius Monk Institute vocal competition, winning a $10,000 scholarship to further her musical education. Judges couldn't exactly place her sound, which blended natural elegance with potent yet impressively controlled presentation, and by 2000 Monheit had joined Diana Krall as one of the highest-touted female talents in jazz. That May she signed to N-Coded and released her debut, Never Never Land. Angelic and conservative, Monheit's structured set of ten popular standards illustrated her still-emerging vocal talents. Come Dream with Me arrived in 2001; it consisted of several standards as well as a few lesser-known jazz compositions. The album wasn't as widely praised as her debut, but her growth as a performer was still evident. Since that time she has released several albums, including In the Sun in 2002, Taking a Chance on Love in 2004, the holiday-themed Season in 2005, and Surrender in 2007.
