The Duke ROBILLARD Band - Duke's Blues 1996
Blues
he last cut, hats off to Albert Collins' "Dyin' Flu," will make you fall down and beg for mercy. This is what happens when a virtuoso blues guitarist doesn't have a thing to prove and slips into the groove. Playing that is listening, ear cocked like a hound dog's in the wind, Robillard hearing whatever it was Collins must have heard when the inspiration for this one came to him. (Definitely not the same thing as imitating licks or covering a tune.) Also a plus is that Duke doesn't burden you with overload in the vocals department but when he does open his mouth, it's so right it hurts. In general Duke sings a lil too much for my taste--he should let the guitar talk for him more of the time. The other great cut on this album is "Never Let You Go" where again Duke stays mainly in instrumental mode. This man is a treasure when he really opens up on the guitar--worth waiting for!

In 1990, Robillard joined the Fabulous Thunderbirds. Even though he had become a member of the Austin group, the guitarist continued to record and tour as a solo artist, signing with the major label Point Blank/Virgin in 1994 for Temptation. **Duke's Blues** followed two years later, and after one more album for Virgin, 1997's Dangerous Place, Robillard signed to Shanachie for 1999's New Blues for Modern Man. Conversations in Swing Guitar followed later that year, and the prolific guitarist returned in mid-2000 with Explorer.

Duke ROBILLARD - Uptown Blues Jazz Rock and Swing Guitar 2006 (AVI)
Duke ROBILLARD - Uptown Blues Jazz Rock and Swing Guitar 2006 (AVI)
Blues
Take a tour of some great 1940's and 1950's American styles on "Uptown Blues, Jazz, Rock & Swing Guitar", as Duke Robillard shows you T-Bone Walker style, 9th chord extensions, blues-based swing, Chralie Christian style, passing tones, Les Paul style, scraping the strings, special rhythm licks, fast note flurries and rock 'n' roll style. Let Duke Robillard share his amazing skills with you in this classic Hot Licks session. "Uptown Blues, Jazz, Rock & Swing Guitar" features a new introduction by Woody Mann.
Jazz and blues guitarist Woody Mann learned from legendary Rev. Gary Davis and then played and recorded with Son House, Bukka White and John Fahey. He has performed throughout the world, recorded over a dozen CDs, and is an internationally renowned guitar teacher.
For the first time the legendary Hot Licks classic video titles are available on DVD, making it even easier to learn with top players... right in your own home!
You'll never miss a note! You see the music and the tablature on screen as it's being played! All right and left hand techniques are shown in close up and with helpful split-screen effects to make learning easy. Also features slow motion segments with standard pitch sound.
**
Duke Robillard brings his years of professional experience to the table in an effort to help aspiring guitarists learn the licks of smooth jazz and uptown blues. Robillard is an accomplished soloist as well as a contributing member of the Fabulous Thunderbirds, and those familiar with his music will definitely appreciate his association with Hot Licks Video. This tutorial video will help the guitar player that has the basics down but wants to expand into new territories. With a gentle teaching style, Robillard expounds the techniques of T-Bone Walker and his 9th chord extensions, how to make your axe sound like an organ, several Texas style guitar tricks, and chord substitutions. Like all other Hot Licks Video efforts, Duke Robillard: Uptown Blues, Jazz, Rock and Uptown Swing competently presents the how-tos of guitar playing.

Duke ROBILLARD - Living With The Blues 2002
Duke ROBILLARD - Living With The Blues 2002
Blues
This is a very good record by one of the current best guitar players and blues musicians. Here Duke devotes most of his time to received repertoire, offering as always first-class playing. He covers magnificently songs from B. B. King, Guitar Slim, Freddie King and also an unplugged version of a slide guitar master Tampa Red's "Hard Road". The record also contains a very attractive cover of Willie Dixon's "I live the life I love", first recorded by Muddy Waters, who made it one of this classic tunes. The title record song "Living with the Blues", besides being a great tune by Brownie McGhee, is an appropriate title for this album. It is of course very hard to say who my favourite guitarist is, because there are several players who can qualify depending of the moment, but I'm sure DUKE ROBILLARD is one of them.

Roomful of Blues founding guitarist Duke Robillard initially signed to Canadian label Stony Plain with the intention of playing more straightforward music, to stick to the blues, instead of the musical mélange that had long been his specialty. But his 2002 outing for the label, Living with the Blues, shows that when Robillard immerses himself in a genre, he still can't help exploring that genre's stylistic variety. This album includes everything from the Freddie King tune "Use What You Got," performed with a taut intensity reminiscent of Muddy Waters, to a delta-inflected Tampa Red song, "Hard Road," to the funk-edged "Goodtime Charlie." Robillard has been highly praised in blues circles for many years, especially after embarking on his solo career in 1990. He performs all the above with the apparent ease that mastery allows. While Living with the Blues is often determinedly low-key, Robillard's enthusiasm and imagination shine through with a soft, consistent glow.

Duke ROBILLARD - Blue Mood (The Songs of T-Bone Walker) 2004 (REPOST)
Duke ROBILLARD - Blue Mood (The Songs of T-Bone Walker) 2004 (REPOST)
Label: Stony Plain
Blues
Duke Robillard's command of guitarist T-Bone Walker's flashy but fluid style--full of rich passing chords, rippling melodies, sweetly sculpted bends, and elegant jazz-influenced phrasing, anchors this 12-song tribute to the pioneering electric bluesman from Texas. But it's obvious that Robillard has absorbed every detail of Walker's music. The horn arrangements are lush and, when muted trumpet and clarinet enter the mix on "I'm Still in Love With You" and "Born to Be No Good," downright sensual. Every track swings, from the revved-up guitar showcase "T-Bone Boogie" to the slow, simmering heartbreak ballads "Blue Mood" and "Love Is a Gamble." And Robillard emulates the bold, declamatory side of Walker's singing style with husky power and authority. Although no substitute for T-Bone's own high-voltage recordings, these tracks are a winning testimonial to the durability of Walker's creative genius.
