Bryan LEE - Memphis Bound 1993

Bryan LEE - Memphis Bound 1993

Blues

A longtime staple of New Orleans' famed Bourbon Street club circuit, blues guitarist Bryan Lee was born in Wisconsin in 1945; inspired by B.B. King, Albert King and others, his Midwest upbringing also resulted in a distinctively Chicago-styled sound which his long stay in the South did little to erase. Billed variously as "The Braille Blues Daddy" and "The Blind Blues Daddy," Lee first surfaced in New Orleans in 1983, quickly becoming a favorite of tourists in the city's French Quarter and regularly playing live at least six nights a week; he made his solo debut in 1991 with The Blues Is..., followed in 1993 by Memphis Bound. After 1995's Heat Seeking Missile, Lee issued 1997's Live at the Old Absinthe House Bar: Friday Night, an ideal souvenir for the many patrons of his club dates. Crawfish Lady followed in the spring of 2000, and Six String Therapy in fall 2002.

Bryan LEE - Heat Seeking Missile 1995

Bryan LEE - Heat Seeking Missile 1995

Blues

"If by the halfway point on Heat Seeking Missile, you haven't already deduced Bryan Lee's position in the blues hierarchy, the irrepressible guitarist will make it easy for you.
You got the John Lee Hooker boogie, got the Magic Sam boogie, got the Freddie King boogie, got the James Cotton boogie, " he sings on "Blind Man Boogie," a rollicking jump blues number. "Now I can boogie like nobody else. Got my own boogie, got to express myself."
And express himself he does, on that cut, throughout the ten others on Heat Seeking Missile (his fourth album for Montreal-based Justin Time Records), and in every aspect of his remarkable career.
Much of his tenure in the Crescent City has been spent performing in the French Quarter, cranking out four sets a night five nights a week with his band, The Jump Street Five. When he leaves the Quarter to play elsewhere, his performances are met with universal praise. He has been a favourite at the New Orleans Jazz & Heritage Festival for over a decade, and recent appearances at the Montreal Jazz Festival have inspired critical raves.
And with each successive trip to the studio, Lee has sharpened his skills as a musician, bandleader and producer. Heat Seeking Missile is far and away his most accomplished album in terms of song writing, (7 of the 11 cuts are Bryan Lee originals) arrangements and performance.
Bryan Lee has grown with every album, gaining the confidence to make the kind of record he envisions. With Heat Seeking Missile, the bluesman has crafted an album that should lay his talents out for all the world to see...."
**
Why Bryan Lee isn't a household name is beyond me...but with work like this it has only got to be a matter of time.
The album contains the usual mix of full on power blues (Heat Seeking Missile), Bryan Lee style boogie (Blind Man Boogie) and gospel tinged R'n'B (Can't Stop This Heartache) that you can expect from any Bryan Lee release.
Stand out track has to be 'Pain'. If you are in to Otis Grand then you will love Bryan Lee - and vice versa.
As the man says 'Fight for the light - Jesus is gonna take you higher'.

Bryan LEE - Braille Blues Daddy 1995

Bryan LEE - Braille Blues Daddy 1995
Label: Justin Time

Blues

Born in Two Rivers (March 16, 1943), Wisconsin, Lee completely lost his eyesight by the age of eight. His avid interest in early rock and blues was fostered through the 1950s by late night listening sessions via the Nashville-based radio station WLAC AM, where he first encountered the sounds of Elmore James, Albert King and Albert Collins.
By his late teens, Lee was playing rhythm guitar in a regional band called The Glaciers that covered Elvis Presley, Little Richard and Chuck Berry material. Through the 1960s, Lee's interest turned to Chicago blues and he soon found himself immersed on that scene, opening for some of his boyhood heroes.
In January of 1982, Lee moved to New Orleans, eventually landing a steady gig at the Old Absinthe House on Bourbon Street becoming a favorite of tourists in the city's French Quarter. For the next 14 years, Lee and his Jump Street Five played five nights a week at that popular bar, developing a huge following and a solid reputation.
Today Lee continues to perform in New Orleans. He also tours several times a year in the Midwest, Eastern Seaboard, Rocky Mountain States and recently Europe. Lee appeared with Kenny Wayne Shepherd as the musical guest on the Tonight Show with Jay Leno on February 14, 2007.
