Jazz

Through the early 1970s, Russell did most of his work in Norway and Sweden. He played there with young musicians who would go on to international fame: guitarist Terje Rypdal, saxophonist Jan Garbarek and drummer Jon Christensen. This Scandinavian period also provided opportunities to write for larger groupings, and Russell's larger-scale compositions of this time pursue his idea of "vertical form", which he described as "layers or strata of divergent modes of rhythmic behaviour". The Electronic Sonata for Souls Loved by Nature, commissioned by Bosse Broberg of Swedish Radio to write for the Radio Orchestra, was first recorded in 1968, as an extended work recorded with electronic tape. It continued Russell's continuing exploration of new approaches and new instrumentation.

Russell has received the MacArthur Foundation Fellowship, the National Endowment for the Arts American Jazz Master, been elected a Foreign Member of the Royal Swedish Academy, two Guggenheim Fellowships, the Oscar du Disque de Jazz, the Guardian Award, six NEA Music Fellowships, the American Music Award, and numerous others.

Trip to Pillarguri is a live sextet album from 1970, with a similar instrumentation to the Electronic Sonata album(s) (there's even an excerpt from the sonata here). I guess the repertoire is mostly made up of then-recent compositions, except for a version of Stratusphunk. With Garbarek, Rypdal, Arild Andersen and Jon Christensen present, the sound is close to the early Garbarek albums (Esoteric Circle and Afric Pepperbird). It's not a very well-known or celebrated album (the review in the Penguin Guide was't particularly favorable), but it's still an interesting album, well worth downloading. Plus I had been curious to hear it for years.
