Gabor SZABO - High Contrast 1970

Gabor SZABO - High Contrast 1970
Label: Verve
Audio CD: (March 25, 2003)
Recorded probably December 1970 at The Record Plant,
Hollywood, and February 1971 at Capitol Studios, Hollywood

Jazz

An unusually successful pairing of Gabor Szabo with R&B legend Bobby Womack. Szabo digs deep into a soulful groove, inspired by Womack's silky smooth originals. High Contrast features "Breezin," the Womack tune written especially for Szabo, which George Benson parlayed into a huge hit in 1976, and several tunes Womack popularized in the film Across 110th Street.

Master guitarist Gabor Szabo expertly straddled the worlds of jazz, rock, Latin music, and rhythm & blues. On these sessions, he joined forces with another guitarist, Bobby Womack, best known as a leading R&B singer and songwriter. High Contrast includes the original version of Womack's "Breezin'," which would later be a giant worldwide hit for George Benson

On this 1970 release, soulster Bobby Womack proves to be an inspired foil for guitarist Gabor Szabo, who brings some R&B swagger to his singular post-bop-meets-Hungarian-folk-fusion style. The sleekly catchy "Breezin" became a minor R&B hit, but George Benson's later mega-smash version of the tune really wasn't all that different from the original here.
