Dave MENIKETTI - On The Blue Side 2000

Dave MENIKETTI - On The Blue Side 2000
Label: Meanstreak Music Co.

Blues

One of the first "vinyl" albums I purchased back in the very early 1980's was Y&T's "Black Tiger." I was 16 at the time, and bought it just because the album cover was way cool (black tiger....go figure). I had no idea it was the beginning of a long and amazing journey and love affair with Dave and his band(s). I have always had a special spot in my heart for Dave's playing, because no matter what the song subject matter entailed, you could taste the stinging blues flavor in his playing and singing. I have a tremendous admiration for those master "slingers" who sing to their compositions because they believe their voice fits the musical style and playing the best (Terrible Ted, Johnny Winter, Gary Moore, Dave Meniketti, Zakk Wylde; crossing generations and musical states).
This album simply oozes soul, and Dave's playing is intricately a bluesy, smokin' rock! Though maybe not the most technically competent player, Dave mixes the compositions up so that the synergisitic sum of the parts exceeds any other guitarists' works I have heard in a VERY long time. I have seen Y&T three times over the course of 20 years, and the shows are pure energy; always sounding better than any their studio recordings. Dave "blazes" live!
This album is a must for fans of Y&T, Dave Meniketti, blues based hard rock and guitar officionados. If you EVER get a chance to see him/them live, as the days of this ilk and quality of musicians are numbered, SEE THEM! I will refund your money if you are in the least bit disappointed!

Despite being best known as the guitar slinger for Bay Area pop metallists Y&T, Dave Meniketti has always had a fondness for the blues, as heard throughout his first-ever solo album, 2000s On the Blue Side. Although it's not new for a metal guitarist to rediscover their blues roots (Gary Moore successfully reinvented himself as a bluesmen in the early '90s), Meniketti gets to show off his blues chops throughout. Included is an album-opening cover of James Brown's "Man's World," while Meniketti does a pretty darn impressive Billy Gibbons impersonation on "Angel on my Shoulder." He pays tribute to Stevie Ray Vaughan on "Just Coastin'," and pours out his heart and soul on "Until Next Time." Those who have Meniketti pegged as merely a heavy metal guitarist will certainly change their tune after hearing On the Blue Side. By Greg Prato, All Music Guide.
