This live recording of the Chicago blues band, taped in 2005 at the Sierra Nevada Brewery, showcases Slim's slashing, vibrato-drenched guitar, mountain-moving vocals and presents an authentic South Side, back-alley excursion into the true blues.
Magic Slim is known as the personification of a rollicking, electrified blues style, born of a cross-pollination of Mississippi and Chicago influences. A musician for most of his life, Slim's history is quintessential blues: born in the Deep South, he lost a finger in a cotton gin accident and was forced to switch from piano to guitar. He began playing house parties on the weekends at age 11, and after moving to Chicago before he was old enough to be in the bars in which he was performing, his Teardrops have become recognized as the last true Chicago blues band. Recalling Howlin' Wolf with his gruff vocals and no-nonsense, unapologetic delivery, Slim's imposing stature and improvisational tendencies make for a raw blues experience and an unforgettable stage show. Filmed here in 2005 at the Sierra Nevada Brewery, Slim's authentic south-side sound features his trademark vibrato and earthy, irresistible vocals, clearly showing why this group became one of the most popular touring blues bands around.

The Teardrops weathered a potentially devastating change when longtime second guitarist John Primer cut his own major-label debut for Code Blue, but with Slim and bass-wielding brother Nick Holt still on board, it's doubtful the quartet's overall sound will change dramatically in Primer's absence. In 1996, Slim signed with Blind Pig and has cut some of the most-celebrated albums of his career, including Scufflin' in 1996, Black Tornado in 1998, Snakebite in 2000, and Blue Magic in 2002. A live recording taped in 2005 at the Sierra Nevada Brewery was released that same year on both DVD and CD as Anything Can Happen. Tin Pan Alley, a set of recordings made between 1992 and 1998 in Chicago and Europe, was released in 2006 by Austria's Wolf Records. Midnight Blues appeared in 2008.

If Magic Slim & The Teardrops AREN'T the best pure Chicago Blues band around somebody's going to have to prove it to me. Though a live album will never match what Slim & his band can do on stage, this album proves to be a great way to get pumped for one of his shows or a way to cure your jonesing between shows. Played loud enough, you can nearly feel the presence of the man coming through the speakers along with his guitar. After listening to this album a couple hundred times, I highly recommend taking it to your local blues club and forcing the owner to book Slim to come to your town. Get some copies of Black Tornado, Grand Slam & Snakebite if the owner needs some extra convincing. I've seen Slim and various versions of the Teardrops going back to 1991 in Chicago and most recently in 2004 in Tennessee and have always been absolutely blown away by what this band can do on stage. If you've never seen Slim & The Teardrops live, you can start buy picking up a copy of this album to prepare you for the experience of seeing them either in your town, on the road, or maybe it's time to start considering a trip to Chicago.

Snakebite is the best and most cohesive Magic Slim album to date, where all the things he does best come together in one place. Expertly produced by Dick Shurman, this spotlights all the groove that makes Slim a bandstand favorite, with none of the rough edges that mar his other studio or live efforts. The songs are top-notch (seven of the 11 tunes here are Slim originals), and this version of the Teardrops -- Nick Holt on bass, Allen Kirk on drums, and Michael Dotson on second guitar -- lay a greasy pocket down behind their leader that fits perfectly. Slim's vocals are spot-on, and his guitar work is his most focused yet. A truly inspired session, this is the perfect introduction to Magic Slim.

Another solid Slim set with an additional emphasis on the considerable contributions of second guitarist John Primer, who handles vocals on three cuts (including covers of Otis Redding's "Hard to Handle" and Eugene Church's "Pretty Girls Everywhere"). This was a particularly potent edition of Teardrops, pounding through Slim's own title cut and "Please Don't Waste My Time" and Albert King's shuffling "Cold Women with Warm Hearts" with barroom bravado

Magic Slim knows how NOT to overdo a good thing, a rare feat in modern blues. It's as if he was still constrained by a 78 RPM disc. The guitar solos on "Hard to Handle" and "Gravel Road" are tasty, leaving you wanting more. He's got a funky strum technique visible on "Slims Hideaway" and "Mustang Sally"  subtle and very effective. A superlative artist who has not outstayed his welcome in the least!

If you're want to get just one studio recording of the Teardrops to sample their sound, this is probably the one to get, recorded before long-time rhythm guitarist John Primer went solo. It is anchored by two great songs ;"Cold Women With Warm Hearts" and Slim's slap in the face treatment of "Mustang Sally."

Magic Slim has released a pile of albums, all of them true to his group's house-rocking credo. The idea this time around was to hook him up with producer Dick Shurman and get Slim to record tunes he hadn't committed to wax yet. With a tight version of the Teardrops aboard (the ubiquitous Nick Holt on bass and vocals, Michael Dotson on rhythm, Allen Kirk on drums, and Slim's son Shawn Holt making a guest appearance on "Young Man's Blues"), Slim turns in a solid effort here. But perhaps the biggest change this time around is the inclusion of four original tunes from Slim, big news for a combo that many consider to be the ultimate blues cover band. Counting Nick Holt's "Playin' with My Mind" and Shawn Holt's "Young Man's Blues," the original material is up to the 50-percent mark, making this their most adventuresome outing to date.

Whenever I think that the blue flame is flickering low, I put on "Black Tornado." On this CD, Magic Slim--who has been turning out great work for years--turned out a CD that exemplifies the best of electrified but down-home blues. From first to last cut, this CD is intense, powerful, and always surprisingly musical. Slim's vocals are excellent, and his guitar work shows that the Fender Jazzmaster makes a great blues instrument. The guitar tone in particular is noteworthy for its combined power and clarity. Overall, the CD has that same quality of absolute, unadulterated authenticity that marks the great Chess, Robinson, and Bihari recordings of the 1950s. It should be in the collection of all blues fans.

If you are a fan of Chicago blues and you have never heard of Magic Slim, go immediately and get as many CDs of his as you can find. "Raw Magic" is the very best one, and my favorite blues album of all time. Although it is in part a compilation of some earlier released material, it holds together like a perfect studio album should (for those who think the best blues is live blues, take a listen to this CD). Magic has a powerful voice to match his tremulous and beautifully jarring guitar playing. The rhythm guitarist, Jr. Pettis, lays down pulsating chords around Magic's solos that almost sound like an organ. Nate Applewhite and Nick Holt work the drums and bass hard. That's all there is to the sound -- no horns, no piano, no nothing; for my money, the best Chicago blues is exactly that: 2 guitars, a bass, and drums. All the songs on this album are perfect, but especially check out Slim's version of "Mustang Sally" and "In the Heart of the Blu! es" (there is a certain point in the latter, during one of Slim's solos, where I can actually see God, no joke).

A more consistent studio collection that first came out over in France and translated well to domestic consumption. Only seven titles, including Slim's lusty "Mama Talk to Your Daughter," and a crowd-pleasing "Mustang Sally," and three tunes of the quartet's own making (which is rather rare with this cover-heavy combo).
