Ana POPOVIC & Hush - Live In Zajecar 1997

Ana POPOVIC & Hush - Live In Zajecar 1997

Blues

13 May 1976 - Ana Popovic is born in the old town of Belgrade, formerly Yugoslavia, the first daughter of Milutin and Vesna Popovic. Five years later their second daughter, Maja, is born. Ana grows up in a warm and loving family where music is very important. Her father Milutin is a creditable guitar / bass player, always inviting friends for nightly jam sessions. In this atmosphere Ana grows up, often listening to her father’s impressive blues and soul record collection. Finally, at 15, Ana picks up her father’s guitar.
**
Ana has demonstrated in all her albums the quality and essence of true rock singers and musicians.
She belts it out with her singing and guitar playing. I believe her market demographics would love to hear even stronger guitar licks emphasizing her influences from Hendrix, Stevie Ray, Van Halen
Its amazing that she wasn't born and bred in the U.S. because she has got it all the way!!

Ana POPOVIC - Live in Amsterdam 2005

Ana POPOVIC - Live in Amsterdam 2005

Blues

These Concert was recorded on January 30th, 2005 at the Melkweg in Amsterdam, The Netherlands. A home match for Ana Popovic -- the native of Belgrade lives in Holland since several years. The refrain of her first song "Don't Bear Down On Me" can be taken straight away as the motto of the whole evening: „I'm Here To Steal The Show". And indeed, that's what she does! 29-year-old Ana Popovic proves with her own songs and fresh interpretations that she is an excellent and expressive guitarist with a powerful voice. Ana's groovy music is not suitable for blues purists-she stands for modern and cross-border blues with rock, soul and jazz elements.
**
Many blues-oriented and blues-friendly artists will go their entire careers without ever providing a live album, which is regrettable because live performances are such an important part of the blues experience. Ana Popovic, thankfully, isn't one of them. This 67-minute CD is the Yugoslavian singer/guitarist's third album for Ruf Records, and it is also her first live album. Recorded at an Amsterdam, Holland, show on January 30, 2005 (when Popovic was 28), the disc paints a consistently exciting picture of her talents as a live performer. Popovic is as captivating on the aggressive, confident strut of "My Man" and Howlin' Wolf's "Sittin' on Top of the World" as she is on the moody, dusky jazziness of "Won't Let You Down" and the instrumental "Navajo Moon" (which was written in memory of the late Stevie Ray Vaughan, one of her major influences). Although very blues-friendly, Ana! Live in Amsterdam isn't strictly a document of a blues show -- rather, it is a document of a show in which the blues meet rock, soul, funk, and jazz. An interesting point: although Popovic grew up in the former Yugoslavia and is performing for a Dutch audience on this album, all of her introductions to the songs are in English -- the language that remains a common denominator for blues performers and blues fans all over the world. These days, rock and hip-hop are being performed in a variety of languages other than English, but English remains the official language of the blues -- even if the performer is as much of a non-purist as Popovic, whose excellent Ana! Live in Amsterdam makes it clear that she did the right thing by not waiting until she was 40 or 50 to provide a live album.

Ana POPOVIC - Hush 2002

Ana POPOVIC - Hush 2002

Blues

While the U.S., Britain, and to a lesser extent Canada don't have a stranglehold on the blues, these countries account for the majority of music being produced in that genre. Therefore, when someone from a different nationality releases a strong album in the States, it usually makes news, at least in the rarefied blues universe. Born and raised in Yugoslavia, Ana Popovic would seem to have been brought up in an unusual area to soak in the deep soul, robust swamp rock, and husky R&B she reveals on her first album. But music is a universal language, and Popovic, along with noted blues-rock producer Jim Gaines, has delivered a rugged, confident, and eclectic debut that showcases the artist's many strengths (especially on slide guitar) in songs that shift from jazz ("I Won't Let You Down," "Minute 'Til Dawn") to deep funk (an innovative cover of Tom Waits' "Downtown") and soulful pop ("How Lonely Can a Woman Get?"). With a husky, sensuous voice similar to the Pretenders' Chrissie Hynde, she digs into these tunes with authority, even if English isn't her first language. A duet (guitar and vocal) with Bernard Allison on Johnny Copeland's "Bring Your Fine Self Home" is both sexy and gritty, as the two trade verses and riffs with obvious excitement and mutual respect. A raging version of Buddy Guy's "A Man of Many Words" (here titled "Girl of Many Words") rescues that song from obscurity as Popovic whips out a slimy version with rollicking horns that updates the tune while making it her own. Her originals don't push the limits of the genre, yet they are compressed slices of blues-rock that are excellent showcases for Popovic's tough vocals, wiry, Hendrix-styled leads, and robust stance. The self-penned "Hometown," a greasy, slinky trip down to New Orleans with hypnotic tribal drums, is but one of the album's gripping centerpieces. Recorded in Memphis and sounding like it, Popovic has captured the city's evocative, unvarnished R&B charm on this polished but far-from-slick album. A welcome shot of sex and showmanship in the blues world, Ana Popovic's American debut is a tour de force for this newcomer brimming with sass, brains, and talent.

Ana POPOVIC - Hometown 1998

Ana POPOVIC - Hometown 1998

Blues

Music now begins to take up more time as Ana forms her very first band ‘Hush’ with friend and guitar player Rade Popovic. She rehearses frequently in a small garage in New Belgrade and live shows soon follow. Initially being a girl means Ana having to take second place, but that soon changes. Over the next three years Ana’s band plays all the major club venues - by 1998 doing a hundred shows annually and making regular appearances on Yugoslavian television. The end of Communism means musicians are finally free to travel and Ana now plays blues festivals in Greece & Hungary. With her band Hush she records her first album Hometown as a limited pressing and, in 1998 successfully applies to study Graphic Design in Utrecht. Just a few weeks before her new Graphic Design course starts however, Ana decides to send in a tape to Utrecht’s Conservatory. Ana’s tape is selected right away, leaving her with a choice to make - feeling more a musician than a designer the decision is easily made.
Hometown? (1998) gives a good impression of Ana´s qualities as a singer and especially as a very gifted guitar player.

WOW!!! What a great album! Not only a superb singer and songwriting but an immense natural beauty... not to mention her virtuosic guitar skills. Ana Popovic is a singular talent and this, her US debut, is her finest work to date. She tackles issues such as politics, perserverance and more on this extremely eclectic album. One of the best surprises of this year, I would recommend this album to just about anyone. Ana Popovic's Still Making History is one of the finest pop/rock releases of the year and it proves Ana's potential for superstardom!!!

Ana POPOVIC - Comfort To The Soul 2003

Ana POPOVIC - Comfort To The Soul 2003
Label: Ruf

Blues

In the blues, years or even decades of "payin' dues" is the norm. Most blues musicians toil in relative obscurity, and those that have been at it a while wear their struggles like a badge of honor. By those standards, Ana Popovic's rise has been meteoric. Within five years of leaving her native Yugoslavia, the 26-year-old singer/guitarist has played major European music festivals like Peer, Bishopstock and Notodden. She has shared stages with Bernard Allison, Kenny Neal and Michael Hill and recorded with hitmaker Jim Gaines. Perhaps most impressive of all is her W.C. Handy Blues Award nomination for Best New Artist of 2003 - a rare honor for a European blues artist.
When Ana attends the awards ceremony in Memphis this May, she'll be returning to the place where she recorded her successful Ruf Records debut, "Hush" (Ruf 1063), in 2000. Six months after those sessions, she appeared at the Memphis in May festival alongside Bob Dylan and Ike Turner. This year, Ana's road led back to Memphis - to record "Comfort To The Soul". The album makes one thing clear. Ana Popovic is not about recycling worn-out clichés. Her blues are fresh, positive and genre-expanding.
Ana Popovic was born in Belgrade in 1976. Her father first introduced her to the blues, through an extensive record collection and sessions hosted at the family home. Ana took to the guitar and founded her first serious band at age nineteen. Within a year, she was playing outside of Yugoslavia and opening shows for American blues icons like Junior Wells. By 1998, her band was doing 100 shows annually and appearing regularly on Yugoslavian television. Her debut CD, "Hometown," provided a first glimpse of her talents as a singer and guitarist.
In 1999, Ana relocated to the Netherlands to study jazz guitar. She quickly became a fixture on the Dutch blues scene and soon ventured into neighboring Germany. Ruf Records took notice and invited her to be a part of their Jimi Hendrix tribute, "Blue Haze" (Ruf 1053). A few months later, she was on a plane to Memphis to record the well-received "Hush." Since then, Ana's star has been rising like mercury on a Mississippi summer's day.
With "Comfort to the Soul", Popovic looks ready to take her burgeoning career to the next level. Working with essentially the same team of studio pros as on her Ruf debut - this time under the guidance of both Jim Gaines and David Z. (Buddy Guy, Jonny Lang) - Ana has delivered another diverse package of blues, rock, soul and jazz. She calls it "a return to myself and everything I have felt in the last two years. It's my evolution as a musician."
On the one hand, she pays tribute to the music and musicians who inspired her. "'Sittin' On Top Of The World' is one of the songs I remember from my father's sessions in our home. I like the song's positive message: 'He left me, but I don't worry' ... in other words, I'm happy with myself and havin' a great time." The presence on the album of both this reworked Howlin' Wolf classic and Steely Dan's "Night By Night" speaks for Ana's broad definition of the blues. "This Steely Dan song always felt bluesy to me, because of the chord progression and bluesy guitar riffs."
The album also features a strong batch of thoughtful originals. The instrumental "Navajo Moon" was inspired by a visit to a Navajo reservation in California and by a sunset over the Grand Canyon. Ana wrote "Jaco" after reading a book about Jaco Pastorius, but dedicates it to those she calls "extreme talents, whose destiny was to be a medium for art. People like Jimi Hendrix." In the hard-driving "Don't Bear Down On Me," which she co-wrote with Todd Sharpeville, Ana seems to be singing about her own struggles as a woman in the male-dominated blues world. "Sometimes it's hard. People try to put you down. The message is to go on without them, and do it yourself." The song also expresses her cocky, no-nonsense approach to performing. "I'm a relatively new artist on the scene. The song is basically about what I need to do: steal the show!"
Clearly, Ana Popovic takes her music seriously. It is her road home, to herself. Or - to paraphrase John Lee Hooker - her Healer. "We're living in a time when everything is rushed," she observed recently. "But where are we in all of this? And where's the music?"
Here is "Comfort To The Soul."
Vincent Abbate. RUF.
