Ahmad JAMAL – Standard Eyes 1967

Ahmad JAMAL – Standard Eyes 1967
LPS-786

Jazz

One of Ahmad Jamal's most popular trios, with bassist Israel Crosby and drummer Vernel Fournier, is featured in this Cadet LP anthology of live recordings made between 1958 and 1961 for Argo. Even though the pianist sticks almost exclusively to very familiar standards, his fresh approach to each of them makes his interpretations very distinctive. His spacious, light-hearted and Afro-Cuban-flavored arrangement of "Taboo" (which Art Tatum played as a virtuoso showstopper), the adventurous take of "Billy Boy," and the playfulness of his rapid but brief rendition of "I'll Remember April" are among the standout tracks. While it is preferable to locate each of the original records from which each of these dozen tracks were compiled (since not all of them have been reissued on CD), this LP contains a well-rounded sampling of early Ahmad Jamal for those who neither have the time nor the funds to acquire all of them.

Ahmad JAMAL - Listen to the Ahmad Jamal Quintet 1960

Ahmad JAMAL - Listen to the Ahmad Jamal Quintet 1960
Argo LP-673

Jazz

A nicely expanded take on the Ahmad Jamal sound of the early 60s -- one that adds in guitar from Ray Crawford and violin from Joe Kennedy to Jamal's usual trio grooving! The main focus here is often still on the core group -- which features Israel Crosby on bass and Vernell Fournier on drums -- but the added elements are used sparely to bring in new colors to the tunes, with Kennedy bowing violin lines on most of side one, and Crawford hitting some of his great single-note lines on most of side two. Titles include "Ahmad's Waltz", "Valentina", "Tempo For Two", "Yesterdays", and "Baia".

Ahmad JAMAL – Rossiter Road 1986

Ahmad JAMAL – Rossiter Road 1986
7 81645-1 LP

Jazz

One of Ahmad Jamal's great mid 80s sets for Atlantic Records -- recorded in a spacious acoustic mode that has Jamal crafting beautiful tones on the Steinway, yet never falling into overindulgence! The record's got a surprisingly rhythmic quality -- as the drums of Herlin Riley and bass of James Cammack are often augmented by percussion from Manola Badrena -- fleshing out tunes with complicated changes that soar alongside Jamal's free-floating lines on the keys. The array of colors here is simply beautiful -- deeper and more expressive than Ahmad's sound in earlier years -- on titles that include "Without You", "Acorn", "Yellow Fellow", "Autumn Rain", and "Winter Snow".
From Dusty Groove.
**
Few of pianist Ahmad Jamal's many recordings are not worth picking up, and this effort for Atlantic boasts some fresh material and fine playing. Jamal (joined by bassist James Cammack, drummer Herlin Riley, and percussionist Manolo Badrena) performs seven of his little-known originals and the obscure "Yellow Fellow." The close musical communication by the players is, as always, the main reason to acquire this release.
By Scott Yanow. AMG.
**
This is certainly one of the great jazz albums of the eighties and very popular with testing panels of audio equipment. I have been listening to it for almost twenty years and never got tired of it. Listen to “Without You” or “Yellow Fellow” to get a good idea of what this combination of musicians was capable of. Such a powerful drive from bass and drums makes Jamal fly - how great.
By K.Hug.
**
This disc sizzles for another reason: Herlin Riley, the drummer. Jamal flies, he soars across the keyboard, across modalities and changes like few others, but unlike some other discs, Riley, along with the solid, if sweating, James Cammack, on bass, provides a solid launch pad. Get it, listen, and wonder why these musicians haven't made more albums together.
Highest recommendations.

Ahmad JAMAL – Ahmad Jamal's Alhambra 1961

Ahmad JAMAL – Ahmad Jamal's Alhambra 1961
1962 Pye Jazz Issue

Jazz

Taken from what were probably bassist Israel Crosby's final recordings with pianist Ahmad Jamal (14 months before the bassist's unexpected death), this LP features the classic version of Jamal's Trio (with drummer Vernell Fournier) playing live at the leader's short-lived Chicago club. The interplay between the musicians was often magical, as can be heard on such numbers as "We Kiss In a Shadow," "Love for Sale," "Broadway" and "Isn't It Romantic."
By Scott Yanow. AMG.

The legendary pianist is caught on his home turf at his (then) newly-opened Alhambra night club, a pretty cool Eastern-themed place on Chicago's classy Michigan Ave. The material's standard Jamal for the time  played with his trio that included Israel Crosby on bass and Vernell Fournier on drums.

Ahmad JAMAL - Tranquility 1968

Ahmad JAMAL - Tranquility 1968

Jazz

An obscure late 60s set of tracks that Jamal cut in his pre-Impulse years -- working here with Jamil Sulieman on bass and Frank Gant on drums -- and hitting more of that open-ended approach that would come into his work in the 70s. About half the tracks are still in the shorter, straighter trio mode -- but the other half are hipper and longer. Titles include "Free Again", "Tranquility", "Manhattan Reflections", and "Illusions Opticas". (Original ABC pressing -- harder to get than the Impulse one. Vinyl has numerous marks, but plays well inspite of them. Inner label has marker.)
From Dusty Groove.
**
This hard to find recording is of value if only to hear Jamal's interpretation of two Burt Bacharach/Hal David gems from the '60s, "I Say a Little Prayer" and "The Look of Love." Since the early '50's, Jamal has managed to generate commercial appeal within the piano trio format by crafting memorable arrangements without resorting to cliches. (Jamal's trio concept paved the way for the success of Ramsey Lewis, the Three Sounds and others.) He treats the entire trio -- not just the piano -- as his instrument and has mastered the use of space and dynamic variation in shaping his distinctive group sound. Jamal has a keen sense of formal structure; his concise renderings of standards and pop tunes always offer a fresh take on the familiar -- deconstructing and reconstructing melodic, harmonic and rhythmic themes. This collection is no exception. Check out the bass ostinato which frames Mercer & Mandel's "Emily," or the superimposed rhythms of "Nothing Ever Changes My Love For You." Jamal, himself a major innovator in modern jazz (his significant influence on Miles Davis has been widely noted) is able to continually find inspiration in the developments of other jazz artists. Listen to the modal vamps on his original compositions "Manhattan Reflections" and "Tranquility," inspired by McCoy Tyner's work. Or the reference to Herbie Hancock's Maiden Voyage in "When I Look in Your Eyes." Though he remains open to new trends in jazz, Jamal's music always retains its essential uniqueness. While not to be ranked amongst his greatest works, Tranquility is a very fine recording and any opportunity to hear this master should not be missed. Along with bassist Jamil Nasser and drummer Frank Gant, Ahmad Jamal makes beautiful and accessible trio music conceived with great depth and clarity. ~ Lee Bloom, All Music Guide

Ahmad JAMAL - Intervals 1979

Ahmad JAMAL - Intervals 1979

Jazz

Ahmad Jamal's recording career became temporarily aimless as the 1970s were ending. This very forgettable LP features Jamal on both electric and acoustic piano, saddled by rather commercial arrangements. The tunes are not always bad (five are by the keyboardist), but the dated pop trappings and Jamal's near-anonymity on electric piano make this a set deserving of being quickly passed by.

Ahmad JAMAL - Live! at Blues Alley 1991

Ahmad JAMAL - Live! at Blues Alley 1991

Jazz

Ahmad Jamal is heard during a well-recorded 1991 live set at Blues Alley. He's accompanied by electric bassist James Cammack and drummer David Bowler, while percussionist Selden Newton is added on selected tracks. Starting with a furious take of "Effendi," Jamal detours into two pieces from Miles Davis' repertoire, "So What" and "Milestones," while keeping the tension at a high level. Bill Evans' lovely ballad "Your Story" was still not widely known at the time Jamal recorded it, as it had mostly appeared on a few bootlegs. His interpretation is a little too rushed in places, though the overall feeling is enjoyable. The one original of the date is the pianist's "The Quest for Light," a funky strutting work. Sometimes Jamal's tendency to insert quotes becomes a bit distracting, such as his sudden ill-fitting insertion of a lick from Oliver Nelson's "Stolen Moments" into Johnny Mandel's "A Time for Love." He romps through the Latin-flavored "Serenata" with ease. Jamal has always been a ballad master and his medley of "You're My Everything" and "A Certain Smile" reinforces that claim. Curtis Mayfield's "Pusher Man" adds a more poppish touch to the set, but it works. Jamal wraps the evening with a treatment of "Dreamsville" that is both lush and tense. Although it is unclear what the release date is of this CD, it is a limited edition of just 2,500 copies, available exclusively through www.bluesalleymusicsociety.org.

Ahmad JAMAL - Outertimeinnerspace 1972
Live At Montreux Jazz Festival 1971

Jazz

Ahmad Jamal's final Impulse! date documents his appearance at the 1971 Montreux Jazz Festival. Comprising two epic improvisations, each occupying an entire side of the LP, Outertimeinnerspace is a challenging but deeply rewarding effort that captures the pianist at his most profoundly spiritual, exploring otherworldly dimensions of space and sound. Jamal, bassist Jamil Nasser, and drummer Frank Gant all deliver performances of uncommon intensity, channeling the energy of the audience into music that pulses with life and crackles with inspiration. Both "Bogota" and "Extensions" demand listeners' full immersion, and reward their efforts with music of uncommon daring.

Two of the major stylists in contemporary jazz, pianist, Ahmad Jamal and Vibraphonist, Gary Burton, join forces for the first time in a spirited, greatly entertaining program of improvisations. Ahmad JAMAL - Jamal plays Jamal 1974

Ahmad JAMAL - Jamal plays Jamal 1974
Recorded At Generation Sound In New York on January 1, 1974

Jazz

Jamal Plays Jamal epitomizes the commercial leanings and pop textures that dominate Ahmad Jamal's mid-'70s fusion efforts for the 20th Century label. Though his funkiest and most accessible recording to date, it nevertheless retains the melodic invention and intricacy of his more conventional jazz records. Despite the me-first title, the success of Jamal Plays Jamal hinges most on the pianist's longtime bassist Jamil Nasser, whose fluid, supple rhythms galvanize funk-inspired material like "Eclipse" and "Dialogue." Richard Evans' inspired arrangements are also vital, ranging from the dramatic "Pastures" to the shadowy "Death and Resurrection." Of course, it's Jamal's name above and in the title, and his keyboard work here is both nuanced and dynamic. Jazz purists may reject this music on principle, but more open-minded listeners will appreciate its energy and excitement.

Ahmad JAMAL - At The Blackhawk 1962

Jazz

This is Jamal at his best. For me, these 1961/62 performances are even better than the more famous "at the Pershing" from 1958 because they are more extended and complex; the group is more mature at these sides. Jamal's subtlety was never as captured as in tunes like "We kiss in a shadow" and "Falling in love with love".
By Marcello Menta.
**
I've grooved on Ahmad Jamal since the 50's, and this collection of beautifully recorded live performances from the early 60's is superb. His "classic" trio, with Israel Crosby and Vernell Fournier, ticked like a fine swiss watch. If you like piano jazz, this is pure platinum.

Ahmad JAMAL - Poinciana 1963

Ahmad JAMAL - Poinciana 1963

Jazz

"Poinciana" was such a big hit for the Ahmad Jamal Trio that the album Poinciana (recorded just eight months after the original single version) has a remake that served as the title cut. Performed live at the Spotlight Club in Washington D.C., the music features close musical communication between the trio members (who include bassist Israel Crosby and drummer Vernell Fournier) on such numbers as "A Gal In Calico," "Autumn Leaves," and "This Can't Be Love." Recorded the same day as The Ahmad Jamal Trio, Volume IV, this date was equally rewarding and worth searching for.
By Scott Yanow, All Music Guide.
**
As Miles Davis tells in his autobiography, Jamal's approach to jazz deeply influenced him. This recordings with a drumless trio, featuring Ray Crawford on guitar, show an incredible level of interplay and a carefully balanced alternation between arranged and improvised passages. There is a lot of virtuosity, but it is always functional to the mood and swing of the songs, many of which were later rendered by the famous quintet of Miles Davis with John Coltrane. It is also a kind of classical feeling in the clean touch of Jamal, that turns the music easy to listen in spite of its deepness.

Ahmad JAMAL - Jamalca 1974

Ahmad JAMAL - Jamalca 1974
Recorded at: Generation Sound, NYC & P.S. Recording Studio, Chicago, IL

Jazz

Released in 1974, Jamalca is a far cry from Ahmad Jamal's classic trio recordings from the '50s but in line with his other early-'70s releases. In fact, it has a strong early-'70s vibe in general, in terms of both the arrangements -- which feature blaxploitation-tinged strings, anonymous female background singers, and the occasional flute -- and the repertoire, which includes such then-current numbers as Thom Bell's "Ghetto Child," Marvin Gaye's "Trouble Man," and the Johnny Mandel-penned "M*A*S*H Theme" (also known as "Suicide Is Painless," and a tune that was covered by several other jazz musicians during this era, including Bill Evans, Paul Desmond, and Jimmy Smith ). Jamal himself splits time between Fender Rhodes and acoustic piano and showcases his usual taste and elegance throughout, despite occasionally being overwhelmed by easy listening strings and obtrusive background vocals. This is essentially a crossover album, and while it is dated, it is still enjoyable in spots. Highlights include the breezy "Misdemeanor," the chipper (if somewhat goofy) title track, and the M*A*S*H theme, which stays on just the right side of the cocktail-lounge background music line. At this point, the potential audience for this album will consist more of crate-digging rare groove enthusiasts than straight-ahead jazz fans, but for those in the aforementioned demographics, Jamalca is at least worth a listen.
